In March 2002, I traveled to Beijing and Shanghai, China, as a member of a People to People Ambassador Programs delegation to discuss internet commerce and international law with Chinese lawyers. People to People was founded by President Eisenhower in 1956 to foster understanding among nations through firsthand encounters between ordinary citizens. In my case, my nine days in China impressed me so much that I used my experiences from the trip to craft my second collection of short stories. My alter ego “Adam Chapman” travels to China to do a business deal. Being disabled, “Adam” has his best friend “Eddie North” with him for a more practical reason than just to have a traveling companion. The other complication “Adam” has to deal with is due to the marvels of modern technology. Late one night, he receives a cell phone call from West Virginia. It’s “Dawn,” the girl who broke his heart.

I will be holding a book signing for The Gate of Heavenly Peace . . . and Other Stories at Taylor Books, 226 Capitol Street, Charleston, West Virginia 25301. The book signing will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 6, 2008.
For Dawn, the Alpha Dog . . . and Related Stories, three facets of my life — my disability, the state that I love (West Virginia), and my experiences on the internet — comprised the material from which I took the short stories. I gave the main character my disability as well as my name (although I caution against thinking we are one and the same). I relied on West Virginia to supply the various backdrops to my stories such as Marshall University, the State Capitol Complex in Charleston, and the old house in Mingo County that "Dawn" inherited from her grandmother. I discovered my inspiration in my experiences on the internet. It was on the internet where I met the girl who inspired all eighteen of the stories in Dawn, the Alpha Dog, even the one — the only one — in which Dawn isn't one of the characters. — Adam
